When has Judaism "faced off with" capitalism?

Money vs religion is a common conflict. And the two often recommend
different answers.
How about the American immigrant who chose a 7 day job over Shabbos?
Or his grandson who chose a career rather than staying in places that
have the necessary servives (shul, chinukh, miqvah, kosher food). I
think the birth of the American C movement can be viewed as product of
people trying to compromise their way through that conflict.

See the conflict?!

capitalism.
There hasn't been pure capitalism at least since Teddy Roosevelt or
probably even earlier when Fiske and Gould tried to corner the Gold
Market.

Unlike all the other "isms" on RRW's list, the *ideology* of capitalism
doesn't really conflict with the Torah. Yes, in our vale of tears
people will often be tempted to do the wrong thing, but capitalism
doesn't contradict the Torah or the Mesorah in the ways that the others
do.

I don't have the book in front of me, but ISTR that David Malkiel has
a fascinating and provocative discussion of the issue of "women's
Halachah" in general, and the jewelery issue in particular, in his
recent "Reconstructing Ashkenaz - The Human Face of Franco-German
Jewry, 1000-1250".

Subject: [Avodah] license for doctors
From the encyclopedia of medical halacha od Dr. Steinberg
1. No everyone who wants to be a doctor can take the title - Pele Yoetz
2. There is a difference between rofeh mumche (licensed) and non mumche in terms
of their obligation to pay for damages
Tosefta Gittin 3:13, Baba Kama 6:6 and 9:3
Divrei Shaul YD 365, Maaseh Avraham YD55 explain that this means
that they received a license from a bet din familiar with medical practice
Bet Hillel YD136, Arukh HaShulchan 336b, Tzitz Eliezer 5:Ramat Rachel 22 assume
that the bet din only verified an outside license from a medical board
3. Bet Hillel YD 336a, Olat Shmuel 108, Shiurei Beracha OC 328:9 Arukh
HaShulchan 336:2
Tzitz Eliezer (above) and also R. Zlberstein all state that today a
doctor is a rofeh mumche if he has a license from the government
and one no longer needs the permission of a bet din
without a license one is not a mumcheh and liable for all damages

Subject: [Avodah] scale is way far off
I) The scale is quite different, at least in an absolute sense; about
300,000 Jews were massacred by Chmielnicki, compared to the six million
in the Holocaust.
<http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=469&letter=C> &letter=C)
As usual modern scholarship, being more up to date, takes a hard look at
these figures.
See the article by s. Stampher, jewish history, 17 (2003), 207-227. the
figures for ukranian jews who were massacred are at a maximum 20,000.
