Subject: [Avodah] Why did Tamar not disclose as soon as she realised
Had Tamar advised Yehudah as soon as she realised she was pregnant
[and submitted the ID that she anyway submitted after she had been
condemned to death
i.e. abandoned any evidence that may have been used to point to Yehudah
being the father]
that would have given Yehudah additional options
he could have married her to Sheilah or married her himself
which wold save Yehudah from embarassmsnt
or sent her away
or keep the evidence and condemn her to death
If it is preferable to have oneself incinerated rather than
embarrass someone
is it not preferable to provide these honourable options?
Why did Tamar not make this disclosure as soon as she realised she was
pregnant?
There is a Medrash that she lost those Simanim - [it seems Chazal were
bothered by this Q]
but even so she could have sent a message describing details that would
clearly indicate the truth of her claim
and provide Yehudah with face-saving options
At worst Yehudah may have suspected that she is holding onto the ID
and just claiming that she doesnt have them
thus his actions would have been under duress
is that still not better than what actually happened?
Best,
Meir G. Rabi

Subject: [Avodah] slichot apparel
Anyone have any sources concerning the preferability of an individual
davener wearing taalit and tfillin when saying slichot if their minyan
begins slichot after the earliest time to put them on? I found one article
by Rabbi Daniel Mann on the topic but wondering if anyone has other sources?

Without addressing all the questions here, it's important to remember that
there was no such thing as a pregnancy test in biblical times. When Tamar
missed her period (assuming she had a regular cycle to start out with) she
may well have *suspected* she was pregnant. But she probably didn't know
for certain until close to the point when Yehuda also found out.

Indeed, they did not have tests to provide certainty, but nevertheless, in
those circumstances, just having a reasonable suspicion, would be adequate
for Tamar, in the interest of protecting the honour of Yehudah, to advise
him of their event and the likelihood of her being with child.
And thereby provide him with the opportunity of an honourable course of
action, marrying her himself or to Sheilah.

Subject: [Avodah] Aliyah procedure?
Maaseh shehaya. An oleh said the first bracha and in the middle of the
Aliya suffered a digestive track issue and had to leave the Shul. What
should have been the proper next steps for the reading and for the brachot
once he abandoned the shulchan area?
