Tefillah Meanings: Everything

Yet another detour from Shemoneh Esrei, this time because the thought is from Rashi on this week’s parashah.

This thought from Anne Frank Hy”d is very inspiring. However, Rashi on Bereishis 25:5 (parashas Chayei Sarah) quotes a medrash that goes one step further:

And Avraham gave all that he had to Yitzchaq.
– Bereishis 25:5

Rav Nevhemiah said: He gave him berakhah as a legacy. HQBH had said to Avraham (12:2) “You will be a blessing” which means “the blessing are entrusted to you that you may bless whomsoever you please”, and Abraham transferred them to Isaac.
–  Rashi, quoting Bereishis Raba 61:6

Ben Zoma famously said “אֵיזֶהוּ עָשִׁיר? הַשָּׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ – Who is wealthy? One who is happy with what they have.”

But this pasuq goes beyond that; it doesn’t speak of osher, of wealth, but of kolEverything.

And we refer to this kol in Birkhas haMazon:

A wealthy person is one who realized they have enough, exactly what Hashem deems they need to accomplish what they’re supposed to in life.

But Avraham’s kol is described as the power to bestow barakhos.

We ask in Birkhas Hasmazon to be blessed like they were: To have Everything, which is to be in a position where one can give to others.
